The retina is the light-sensitive structure of the eye—its inner layer and a peripheral part of the visual analyzer. It plays a key role in light perception by converting light waves into nerve impulses and transmitting them through the optic nerve.
Retinal pathologies may result from eye injuries, traumatic brain injuries, or develop as complications of infectious diseases and various systemic conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
Retinal diseases
  • Retinal detachment
  • Diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema
  • Epiretinal fibrosis, vitreofoveal traction syndrome
  • Macular hole
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD, macular dystrophy)
  • Central serous retinopathy
  • Retinal vein occlusion (thrombosis) with macular edema
  • Peripheral retinal degeneration
  • Vitreous body degeneration
  • Hemophthalmos

Symptoms of retinal pathology
Retinal disorders may be accompanied by the following unpleasant symptoms:
  • Darkening of vision
  • A spot in the field of vision
  • Distortion of lines and objects (metamorphopsia)
  • Decreased visual acuity
  • Headaches
  • Periodic blurring of objects

Treatment of retinal pathologies

At the EyeMax Clinic, treatment of retinal disorders (depending on the type) is carried out using the following methods:
  • Vitrectomy (“vitreum” — vitreous body; “ectomy” — removal) — a surgical procedure aimed at partial or complete removal of the vitreous body.
  • Extrascleral buckling — a surgical method for treating retinal detachment by intervening on the surface of the sclera in order to bring the detached area of the retina closer to the pigment epithelium.
  • Laser retinal strengthening (coagulation) — currently one of the most effective procedures used to treat degenerative retinal pathologies and to prevent the development of severe complications, including complete vision loss.
  • Intravitreal injections of medications such as Aflibercept (Eylea) and Vizcue — direct injection of a therapeutic agent into the eyeball.
